I Am Second ~ The Robertsons

I am a Pennsylvania country kid. A redneck.

Growing up, I wasn’t proud of being a country kid. I didn’t realize how privileged and grounding my upbringing was. I thought I was missing out on so much of what the world had to offer.

Not anymore. Now I’m proud to be a Pennsylvania country kid. I’ve realized how it has shaped and molded so much of who I am.

My parents introduced my family to Duck Dynasty. What a riot they are! My children and I used to watch them a lot and we would just laugh and laugh ~ we love them!

I was so impressed when I came across this video on YouTube with some of the Robertsons talking about their testimonies and trials.

My favorite section of the video:

Phil is talking about his sons and their wives running the company, and one of his boys comes to him and says, “Dad, you remember when you started out with that $8000 worth of duck calls?”

I said, “Yep.” They said, “This year we’re going to sell close to a million duck calls.”

“It was either dog luck, but I am giving the credit to God Almighty in Heaven for the duck call sales, the fish that were in the nets way back, for my life. I’m giving the credit to the Almighty.”

When you watch it, think about how one man bowing his knee and walking in obedience to Jesus Christ can transform his family and his future generations.

Coincidence Quote by C.S. Lewis

Just came across this quote in Focus On The Family’s Thriving Family magazine.

“For a Christian, there are, strictly speaking, no chances. A secret Master of the Ceremonies has been at work.”
~ C.S. Lewis

There are no “coincidences” when you walk with Jesus.

God’s Supernatural Provision

Recently we had out-of-town friends visiting and during our visit and prayer time it was decided that we needed to anoint every opening to our home with oil.

Every window and outside door.

Our friends had a small vial of anointing oil in their truck that we used for this task and about halfway through the process it was announced that we may run out of oil. I was reminded of the widow in 2 Kings 4 who needed to pay one of her husband’s creditors or her sons would be taken away as payment. She approached the prophet Elisha for help. He asked her what she had in her house and she replied that she didn’t have anything except a little oil. He instructed her to ask all her neighbors for jars, take them home, close her doors, and begin pouring the oil into the borrowed jars. She did as she was told and the oil flowed until the jars were all full, then the oil stopped flowing. Elisha then instructed her to sell the oil and pay her debts.

As we were running out of oil, I felt prompted to lift my hands and pray that the anointed oil would continue to flow until the anointing job was done. It did. We had enough to anoint every door and window of our home.

That was amazing, but it gets better… Continue reading

Ancient Paths

Jeremiah 6:16 in the Septuagint tells us:

…Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths of the Lord; and see what is the good way, and walk in it, and ye shall find purification for your souls.

According to Vocabulary.com, purification is when things are cleaned and made pure. I like that definition. We need to always be seeking purification ~ cleansing. Striving to walk in the Lord’s ways, striving to be like him, striving to walk in His footsteps, allowing ourselves to be molded and refined for His glory. Cleansed. Continue reading

Called To Be Set Apart

As we move closer to the end times, the spiritual heat in this world is being turned up and the lines of distinction between right and wrong are becoming more blurred. As the spiritual war for our souls rages, I am becoming more and more cognizant that we who are Christ Followers are to be IN this world, not OF it.

Set apart for His Glory.

Consider the following verses:

Dear friends, I warn you as “temporary residents and foreigners”
to keep away from worldly desires that wage war against your very souls.
1 Peter 2:11 NLT

Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world.
If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh,
and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life,
is not of the Father, but is of the world.
And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof:
but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
1 John 2: 15-17 KJV

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
Romans 12:2 KJV

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this:
to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself
from being polluted by the world.
James 1:27

Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord,
and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you
2 Corinthians 6:17

We live in this world. We are ambassadors for Christ here. We represent Him.

But it is not an easy road.

Those of us who are spiritually sensitive can feel things ramping up in the spirit realm. Darkness is increasing.

So when I found this picture on the Above Rubies website, I knew I had to put it on my own website to encourage you, my fellow warriors, to stand strong in the faith even when you stand out!

Allow Yourself To Be Vulnerable

From The Four Loves by C. S. Lewis:

Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable.

There was a time when my heart had become hardened in relationships with others. Chronic fatigue and depression had also set in and the “fight or flight” mechanism had definitely switched completely to “flight.” Then a close friend passed away. She didn’t just pass away, she disappeared for 11 days and when they found her they discovered she had taken her own life.

That was a dismal day.

But through the funeral and grieving process I discovered something amazing. There was an awakening happening inside me. Where I would normally have wanted to draw inside myself and stay away from people because getting too close means you may lose them, and that would hurt, I wanted to run to my departed friend’s other friends, share a pot of tea with them, and draw close to the ones who had loved my friend as much as I did.

And that felt really, really good.

Don’t allow anything to keep you from “feeling” ~ it only leads to a dark place. Instead, rejoice in the moment you are in. That is one of the key ingredients of overcoming or preventing depression.

Talk About Divine Appointments!

Over the years I have heard about and experienced a number of Divine appointments ~ “chance” encounters clearly engineered God. When I heard my new friend’s story, it completely blew me away!

Linda and her husband adopted 2 children (a boy and a girl) from Haiti. In 2000, while awaiting the adoption of their daughter, Linda had a “chance” encounter with a fellow customer in a grocery store in their small Iowa town. One thing in the conversation led to another and it was discovered the woman had done mission work at the very orphanage in Haiti where their daughter had been dropped off by her birth father, This woman had taken a group photo that included their future daughter’s birth father!

That’s not all ~ the lady and her husband had themselves transported the little girl to the Maranatha Children’s Home in Port-au-Prince which led to her being adopted by my friends.

The next year they adopted a little boy from the same organization. The year following his adoption, Linda just “happened” to be visiting a thrift store in their hometown in Iowa when she and another customer struck up a conversation. One thing in the conversation led to another and it was discovered this second woman also had done mission work at the same orphanage where Linda’s son had been dropped off and she had a picture of him and his birth father together! She had been there that very day!

Unbelievable!

Linda tells me she could spend all night telling stories of God’s intervention and provision during the long, arduous process of adopting from another country.

Both she and her husband know God was intimately involved in the entire process and they give Him the glory.

I would encourage you today to trust Him with the details of your life. He can do amazing things!

More Than A Cleaning Lady

Subtitle: Why Would Anyone Want To Clean Houses For A Living?

*Author’s Update October 2018:

I originally wrote this blog post in 2012 and it’s original title was Dear Katie.

A lot has happened since then. A lot of water under the bridge, as they say. While reading over it, I’ve thought of several things I’d like to add.

I’d like to give credit for the new title of this article to my dear friend and customer Sheila, who passed away a few years ago. She would never let me put myself down and would always tell me how much I was SO much more than a cleaning lady because my heart is not to clean but to MINISTER! Continue reading
